The Work Of Pile Drivers

By Marci Nielsen

Construction work is intense and it cannot be started until the grounds have been prepared well to handle the weight of the equipment. Pile drivers are required to drive piles in order to make the grounds stable. However, not everyone can do this. That is why the drivers need special training.

Those interested in pursuing this program should be high school graduates. The program requires the learner to work for not less than 2000 hours annually. To achieve this, you should be at work all through the day in all working days for the year. Therefore, you need to be committed to the program so as to meet the requirements.

There is also classroom training which you need to attend. The total number of hours you have to spend in training for the entire year is usually one hundred and twenty. However, the total course takes one hundred and sixty hours. Nevertheless, the hours vary depending on the country you are studying at. The training can be held in any institution of learning. Nevertheless, vocational or technical schools are preferred.

At the end of the training, you will be required to sit for exams. You will only be certified if you pass the exams. From there henceforth, you can be allowed to work on your own. However, you will have to repeat in case you fail. You ought to remain an apprentice for 4 years. After you have graduated, you can be able to operate locomotives, barges, crawler treads and skids.

You will be required to move foot and hand levers when hosting equipment. This is done to position the piling leads or hoist them. You will also have to do this when positioning hammers on top of the pilings. You are also responsible for conducting equipment checks before you operate them. This is very crucial as it confirms their functionality.

These drivers are also required to drive piles which provide support to buildings. There are also a number of other structures which have to be supported. The process makes use of heavy equipment and someone who is not skilled in their operation should not even try to do so on his or her own. Drop-hammers have to be lowered or raised depending on the circumstances. To activate the power hammer, the driver has to turn the valves and also move the levers. The equipment should not be left dirty. You ought to oil them up and do any refills needed before you break for the day.

It is your role to operate vehicles, automated devices and equipment. They have to be maneuvered and navigated well when running them. This is not a job you can leave to less qualified people. In addition, one will also be required to operate vehicles carrying passengers, forklift, watercrafts and even aircrafts.

You ought to take the training very seriously if you wish to succeed. Because of the technicalities involved in operating such equipment, the learning process is intense. Only aggressive students will be able to make it up to the end. The instructors are strict for they understand the threats posed by this equipment if they are not handled well.
