Fondly called the frenchie by dog lovers, this dog does not live very long on average. It usually lives only around eight to ten years, and a bot longer if well looked after. Thus you need to watch its diet and health maintenance schedules as recommended by your vet. Also one must be prepared for it getting eye problems, especially cataracts, as it ages.

Due to its pug nose and smaller than usual airway, being more compact, it has a harder time regulating its internal body temperature. It thus cannot live very well in places with extreme climates such as tropical or sub arctic weather conditions. It has been know to die in extreme temperature areas.

It is smaller than its English cousin the English bulldog, having perennially erect ears, smaller body with a wider girth and shorter legs. It does however lack the aggressive alpha male behavior of the English bully and thus much safer to keep around children and other animals. Female frenchies are also known to be very protective of those they care for.

Many will say that the energy level of the frenchie is a medium. This means it is quite active in most respects, but surprisingly enough they can be quite happy being inactive for a long time. Thus they can be quite well adapted to small apartments or condos even and other small living spaces. Remember to at least give them a thirty minute walk a day for them to stretch and let go of some excess energy.

Many owners of this dog will say that this breed demands a lot of attention, and if possible, all of your attention. Should it feel that it is not getting enough lover from you, it will let out an eerie ululating sound which has been labeled as the French death yodel.
