Getting Ready For Barbary Sheep Hunting

By Melissa Stewart

People engage in different sports for pleasure. If you like the thrill of being in the outdoors and want something to take home as a trophy, then you should consider going for Barbary sheep hunting. Even though you may not be able to prepare and eat what you catch, you shall have had fun and will have something to show for your effort. As a beginner, various things need to be done, before you can go for this trip.

First, you have to apply for a license and if you already own one, check its status. Anyone over the age of seventeen is allowed to hunt, but the privileges on your permit will depend on your expertise. Some of these permits are free, while others will cost you up to fifty dollars. However, they are a compulsory requirement for any hunter.

Hunting activities are not ideal for a non-fit person. There may also not be good if you get panic attacks or have an existing heart condition. However, if your doctor deems you healthy, you can start training for this trip. Additionally, you will need to start honing your skills and learning as much about sheep hunting as you can.

Most people who run hunting businesses will offer you either guided or semi-guided tours. The one you choose will depend on your expertise. If you have not been doing this for long, then you might benefit from having a professional on your team. If you know an expert, you can invite them with you, or you can hire a guide.

Mostly when hunting for these creatures, people go for the males. These are usually easier to locate when they are looking for partners during the mating season. Most ranches organize sheep hunts either in spring or fall. This way their numbers can stabilize, and it also prevents young sheep from getting caught in the crossfire.

Unless you own the land where the hunting will be taking place you have to set aside some money for this activity. Some people will charge you per head while others will have fixed packages for different rates. If you have many people with you then choosing an existing payment package may be better than paying per head.

Having the right gear for this activity is vital. Your weapons must be in good condition, and you should know them intimately. You should also invest in good camouflage clothing because sheep have excellent eyesight. Considering you will be out in the wild, you might also want to invest in sturdy boots as well as insect repellent.

Unless this was a last minute decision, try to arrange for this trip at least two months in advance. This allows people to clear their schedules and to get their finances in order. It also ensures that you get to go where you want, instead of scrambling for any available openings. When including people with busy schedules, try to ensure that the trips fall on the weekends of holidays.
