Shop At A Missouri Fresh Produce Market

By George Stevens

Make a trip to the local market a fun family outing. If it is planned right, the children will love finding special products at a Missouri fresh produce market. Encourage them to find food they would like to try. Include them in discovering how to prepare it at home.

One of the best reasons to shop at these markets is because the vegetables and fruits are much fresher than what is found in the local health food store or grocery store. Many times the food there is several days old before it even gets put out on the shelf. Community farmers pick their vegetables and fruit the evening before or first thing in the morning before selling them. They want to make sure that they are fresh, crisp and juicy for their customers.

Another advantage to shopping at a local market is getting to know the small business owners and the local farmers. Friendships are made, and it is not uncommon to have some of them offer special discounts after getting to know you well. There is something very special and exciting about helping people become a big success in their business.

One of the advantages to purchasing fruits and vegetables locally is the opportunity to talk with the owner personally. That is the best way to find out if they are organically grown or not. Knowing for sure that no chemicals have been used gives the cook more confidence. It also makes the meal preparation in the home healthier for the whole family.

Most of the local fruits and vegetables taste much better than those that can be purchased in the grocery stores. The main reason is because they are picked when they are ripe and they are usually sold the next day. This can be proven by trying a vegetable or fruit from the local farmers and trying the same thing from the community grocery store. There is no comparison. The local food even makes the meals taste much better.

It is often cheaper to purchase fresh produce from people in the neighborhood than from the normal stores. Any produce that is considered organic is nearly always more expensive in the grocery stores. Neighborhood people have less overhead costs than the other stores.

Seasonal produce is what is most commonly found in the fresh markets in the community. Vegetables and fruits change as the seasons change. This makes it possible for the entire community to enjoy the truest and most delicious flavors and allows them to experience the freshness of seasonal produce. Little by little the local people get used to using and eating the food available during each season.

Be prepared to find foods and special items at the fresh markets that cannot be found in the supermarkets. Locals often raise bees or make special cheeses. It is not uncommon for the women to bake pastries or breads. They willingly allow you to taste these special items, and they enjoy telling you how to make them and how to use them correctly.
