Upgrading With Custom Wire Wheels

By Richard Morgan

A cost effective and simple way to customize a car is to by fitting custom wire wheels for cars. A vehicle will usually have alloy or steel wheels as standard but there are many companies who can supply wire rims to enable the customer to improve the look of their car. A few things should be taken into consideration before opting for this upgrade.

A set can be brought off the shelf for most of the common vehicles and many classics. Ranging in size, color and price there is something to suit everyone. There a many online retailers who stock thousands of different sets and also automotive stores who can order these in within a few days.

Another option is to purchase a used set of wheels. This is a cost effective way of modifying your car with a set costing as little as 300 dollars. Some of these used ones may need refurbishing and there are specialist companies who provide this service. Using powder coating the rims can be returned to their original chrome finish or any color that the customer chooses from around 60 dollars per wheel.

If you are wishing to spend more, then a set can be custom made by hand. Varying in size and number of spokes these sets start at approximately 2,000 dollars rising depending on the style. The center fixing nut or cap can also be customized with a logo or even a photograph of your choice, these centers are usually 3 blade spinners or bars.

When opting to buy and fit a set of wire wheels it is advisable to do a little homework regarding the vehicle. Enough clearance will be needed if fitting bigger rims and other items such as suspension and brakes may need modification depending on the model of car. A mechanic or motor factor will be able to give advice on these matters.

When buying the new wheels it is also a good idea to ensure you have the tools needed to change the wheel in the event of an emergency such as a puncture. Due to the way that many are secured with bar spinners or large center nuts the standard tire lever supplied with your vehicle will not be sufficient. Most sets of rims will come with all the tools provided but it is worth looking into this in case they have to be sourced elsewhere.

Maintenance and cleaning these wire rims is also something to think about. Washing and polishing individual spokes can be very time consuming and tedious. Small non wire brushes, old laces and clothes can be used to get to the hard to get to areas and specialist polishes are also available for chrome finished ones. Also periodically it is necessary to remove the wheels to clean behind and check for any wear or damage.

Before purchasing the new wheels it is well worth talking to a mechanic to make sure any modifications are done properly and also to work out the costs. If buying online be aware that you may not get the after sales service that would be provided with a local retailer. Also it is worth holding on to the original set should the car be sold or traded.
