The Responsible Way To Scrap My Car

By Edward Morris

It sometimes seems as if there are abandoned cars everywhere. Along the highways, in parking lots and in suburbs it is no uncommon to spot obviously abandoned cars left at the side of the road. This is illegal, of course. These cars are ugly sights and they may even prove to be a risk to traffic, to people and to animals. There are legal ways to get rid of an unwanted vehicle. When someone wants to scrap my car they need to follow the proper procedures.

It is a common misconception that once a vehicle is no longer running or in use it is scrapped. This is not the case. Ownership resides in the last person registered to own that vehicle and that person will remain responsible for it until he is no longer the legal owner. It is therefore necessary to have the ownership documents at hand.

The easiest way in which to get rid of cars is to sell them to junkyards. Most junkyards will process the sale very quickly, as long as all the documentation is in order. Junkyards, however, do not pay much for wrecked cars, even if they are actually still in running condition. It may be a good idea to approach several junkyards before finally selling the unwanted vehicle.

If there is no urgency to get rid of the vehicle, it may be well worth the effort to strip it for parts and accessories. Even totally wrecked cars have parts that are still serviceable and the accessories, such as the rims, the sound system the seats and other trimmings may have more value than one might imagine.

In many cases the best course of action is to invest in some repairs in order to get the unwanted vehicle in a proper running condition. If it can be sold as a roadworthy vehicle, a substantial profit can be made. There are always buyers for low budget wheels. Junkyards know this and that is why they buy wrecks for cheap, fix them up and sell them to those that cannot afford another form of transport.

Certain makes and models of cars are sought after by collectors and hobbyist that enjoy restoring cars to their original condition. Such potential buyers often do not care whether the vehicle is in a running condition or not. There are many internet sites where these buyers advertise their needs and while it may take some time to find a buyer, it may be well worth it.

Some people just want to get rid of unwanted cars and they are not interested in earning cash in the process. They have many options too. Wrecks are often adapted to be toys in playgrounds. They are commonly used by marine agencies to act as breeding grounds for fish. A surprising number of artists specialize in turning old wrecks into art works.

Nobody should ever consider leaving their unwanted junk in a public place where it may pose a risk to others. Unwanted cars are littering the countryside and the suburbs and children play in them and animals shelter there, often getting hurt in the process. The responsible course of action is the only honorable way to go.
