The Importance Of Upholding American Muslim Civil Rights

By Nancy Stone

The world nowadays is characterized by the phenomenon of Globalization. Most societies in this day and age are characterized by the Melting Pot, or the amalgamation of cultures. Looking at it all from outside the bubble, one might think that the negative influences of prejudice, bigotry, xenophobia, and the likes, are all things of the past. Needless to say, this is not the case, and just perhaps everyone will benefit to a certain extent from knowing snippets of american Muslim civil rights.

One might think that all this can be boiled down to common sense. After all, as long as one is a citizen of the state, then he or she stands to benefit from the boons of its laws. And then there are the corresponding dues and obligations, which are, then again, reasonable and judicious and are a mere matter of course. However, there are certain convolutions involved here.

One kind of discrimination is the type that occurs in the workplace. The evinced discrimination in this confined space browbeats the free exercise of religion. And, of course, employment is not just something that one can cast off on a whim. You can, therefore, imagine the kind of quandary that those discriminated come up against. They have to live through day by day in that kind of hateful environment, and of course, just about no one deserves that kind of treatment.

There are stipulations in the civil rights code that calls for reasonable accommodation from the employers to give way to an employees religious practices and observances. This is with the provision that the practice and observance do not impinge detrimentally on the employer and cause undue hardship therein. And, of course, thats not usually the case. How hard can it be to observe this one stipulation.

This is the exact reason why civil rights movements are needed. That said, its pretty much obvious that this one is not just a 1960s thing, but something that we still need today, in this day and age. There are different gradations in society, and it might be hard to fathom the realities in each. For example, it is hard for a First World citizen to ever understand the problems and dilemmas in developing countries.

To proactively fight for civil rights, many organizations are working to combat the stigma of discrimination and work to forward their adherents best interests. They could be a verified association in which a great number of people are necessarily a part. Demographics may be definitive, such as when the membership is made up mostly of immigrants, and the like.

Demographics are taken into account, and since xenophobia is something thats not limited to a particular race, ethnicity, and religion, other people tend to be lumped up in the same category with the American Muslims. That includes Arabs in general, and also the Sikhs and South Asian communities. These movements aim to do away with the violence and threats directed toward these demographics just because of their ethnicity and religion.

This is an important step because it cant be denied that this subset of the populace does tend to experience discrimination in schools, workplaces, and general other areas. And they do not necessarily have to be visibly and evidently blackballed. Some kinds of discriminative acts are more subtle and shrouded by the smokescreens of laws and regulations, such as workplaces not granting leaves for Muslim holidays or else establishments not allowing women to wear burkinis in pools and beaches.

Nonetheless, its also a counterintuitive thing to make policies and courses of action from the ivory tower. Really, though, whats needed is an in depth understanding of the issues at hand and engagement with the actors involved. Its only through that that new channels may be made, forging onwards and making headways in the social cancer of bigotry and discrimination..
