Basic Facts On Liposuction Northwest Indiana Residents Should Know

By Jana Serrano

Liposuction (or lipoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery that is performed with the aim of getting better body contours by redistributing body fat. It may be done as a stand alone procedure or together with other similar cosmetic procedures that include among others, face lift, tummy tuck and breast reduction surgery. There are surgeons who can provide the service in Merrillville, IN 46410. Having the procedures done alongside each other generally results in better outcomes. There are important things on liposuction northwest Indiana residents may be interested in.

Since its advent in the 1960s, the procedure has undergone many modifications in a bid to refine the outcomes. Initially, surgeons adopted what is known as the tumescent technique that involved infusing fluid into the areas of interest using cannulas to cause lipolysis. Once the fat had been broken down, it was removed from the site using a high vacuum suction machine. The most preferred mode of anaesthesia at the time was local anaesthesia.

Recently, surgeons have turned to the use of the ultrasound. Here, a probe connected to the machine is used to liquefy fat before it is removed from a site. There has been variable success with some of the surgeons sticking to the older techniques. Overall, newer practices have helped reduce the risks associated with the surgery. They have also decreased post operative discomfort. It should be noted that the success of liposuction is greatly dependent on the surgical skill of the surgeon.

There is a need to undergo preparation just as happens with other types of surgeries. The preparation here is usually simple and seeks to establish whether one is suitable to undergo the procedure. This is done by taking a thorough clinical history and conducting a physical examination. A few blood tests may be done. The candidate must be of good general health and must have fat that can be harvested.

The surgeon strives to use just the right amount of fat failure to which the resultant contours will be uneven. This is an undesired effect and may result in huge disappointments to those affected. There is also a need to cause as little disturbance of the neighbouring tissues as possible. Such tissues include nerve tissues, blood vessels and connective tissue.

Areas from which fat is harvested include the abdomen, the inner thighs, cheeks, ankles and buttocks among others. You need to hold a discussion with your doctor on the areas that should be used for the exercise. Some patients may be required to undergo serial surgeries before the desired results can be achieved.

There are a number of risks that are associated with this procedure. Overzealous removal of fat interferes with body fluid balance which may lead to detrimental systemic effects on the body. Other risks that must also be discussed with your doctor include bleeding, infection, and fat embolism.

Recovery is usually rapid and one can resume their normal routines within a week. It is important to note that liposuction cannot be used as a substitute of proper diet and adequate physical exercise. Rather, it should be used to complement other weight control measures such as diet and physical exercise
