What You Should Know About RV Repair

By Daphne Bowen

For many people, the idea of having a recreational vehicle to take advantage of vacations and holidays in different locations is quite appealing. An RV provides living space which is either driven or towed behind another vehicle. The number of amenities included in the vehicle range from just a shell to provide some shelter from the weather, to a fully equipped luxury home on wheels. At either end of the spectrum, it is likely that there will be repairs which need to be done, in order for the inside space to remain functional. The level of RV repair in Edmonton will depend largely upon the type of recreational vehicle which is used.

Classification of recreational vehicles may include those which travel under their own power. These are further categorized as Class A, Class C or other types of units. Some people elect to purchase a recreational vehicle which is converted from trucks, buses or other motorized units. Those who like to come up with something unique will do the conversion work personally. Repairs on one-of-a-kind units may be somewhat problematic, because standard parts and materials are not necessarily available.

RVs which are towed are another popular design. These are trailers which are pulled by a separate vehicle. The towing unit may be a car for small trailers, or trucks when the trailer is larger than usual. There is more flexibility with a towed unit, since it can be left in a parking space or campground and the towing vehicle used for transportation needs. Towing is done by a bumper hitch, or by a "fifth wheel" connection.

Repairs to the interior of an RV can be similar to those in a stationary residence. The floor coverings can become stained and worn, as well as the seating upholstery. If there are leaks which breach the unit, wood surfaces can swell and twist. Mold can be an issue in such an event. Repairs are done in much the same way as in a residence. Replacing floor coverings, paneling and upholstery may be somewhat more complicated, because many of these items are built in.

Repairs to the exterior of the unit are often different than those which would necessary for a permanent residence. The type of repairs that are necessary will depend upon the composition of the surface. Often this is a composite materials or sometimes one of metal. Some units are largely seamless, but most have at least some seams where moisture entering into the interior which can be a problem.

Parts which may not necessarily be integrated with the RV, but may be attached, such as awnings, hoses and ladders can wear out or loosen over time. Plastic connections and hoses might need to be repaired if they become brittle or cracked. Sometimes units have equipment designed to keep them level when parked. Where trailers or motor homes have slide-outs, the hydraulics on these may fail and need to be repaired.

As with appliances in the home, RV appliances may need repair or replacements. Typical appliances include stove tops, microwaves, ovens, refrigerators and freezers. Other units will need repair work on furnaces and or air conditioning units.
