Basic Requirements For 5 Hour Pre Licensing Course

By Ruthie Calderon

The pre-licensing course or the five hours course is designed by DMV for new drivers to enhance their safety driving skills. It is a requirement for all new drivers before getting their New York Approved driving license. For some, the 5 hour pre licensing course is the only opportunity to learn safety driving, defensive driving and basic road rules, among other factors that will affect driving.

The studies can be taken at commercial driving schools, colleges and high schools, among other facilities. There also are DMV approved centers throughout the country that facilitate these studies. Only approved centers can be used to conduct these studies. The list of approved centers can be obtained from the DMV website.

Colleges and high schools that provide drivers with this specialized training require the approval of NY Education Department. Their instructors and teachers require driver teacher certificates to be allowed to teach. Driving schools are only allowed to employ instructors who are endorsed by virtue of their instructor and classroom qualification in driving.

A person is regarded as a new driver as long as you are making the application for the first time. People whose licenses were waived by other legal articles are not required to take the test. This also means that persons with suspended licenses are not required to sit through the course.

The law defines an approved learning institution as a driving school, agency, municipality or person approved to provide such services by the commissioner. In cases where colleges and high schools provide driving courses Richmond Hill, NY, they must have approved courses on highway safety and general driver training. Their training facilities and design of their curriculum must be approved as well.

For your qualification to be approved, it must have been issued by an institution that is accredited. The institutions are vetted to ensure that they comply with legal requirements. The vetting regards its operating license, mode of instruction and design of its curriculum. The facilities used in training and their instructors must be up to standard.

Upon completion, the Department of Motor Vehicles issues a certificate through the training institution. This certificate indicates that the bearer has completed necessary training or has been part of approved research. College driver education courses that were completed within the past two years qualify an individual for certification.

A research study program is used as an alternative to the training session. The model must be approved by the office of the commissioner. The length and type of training varies from one institution to the other. This method is used to measure the effectiveness of the normal training program in order to improve efficiency. It is aimed at ensuring that new drivers possess the highest level of skills possible.

The units covered in the five hours pre-licensing course include DMV point system, highway transportation and administrative law. It also gives drivers an opportunity to learn the effects of emotions, skills and attitudes on the road. Drivers are introduced to defensive driving and how physics applies on the road. It will guarantee the safety of each driver and fellow road users by increasing their awareness of crucial road use factors.
