Important Facts About New York IRP Registration

By Joseph King

The United States Border with Canada is rich with a network of roads that cross borders. This means that the roads pass though different jurisdictions that have different regulations and rules governing transport systems. The network is important because it enhances and facilitates trade and transport of goods and people. This makes it necessary to come up with an agreement that governs transport in these areas. It aims at avoiding disagreements and making trade easy. The office in Albany does all New York IRP registration.

There exists an International Plan between jurisdictions including District of Columbia, the states within Continental United States and Canadian Provinces. It oversees the registration of commercial trucks that are operating in any of the covered jurisdictions. It allows the sharing of this expansive road network with ease as well as promoting business and trade. The main customer counter is located in Albany, NY.

Any individual wishing to enter their vehicle in this agreement must register and pay a fee. This can be done in any of the respective jurisdiction preferably one in which they reside or conduct business from. The person is then issued a certificate, cab cards and apportionment plates. The cab cards are usable at any place within the jurisdiction covered. They list the places that fall within the agreement. Fees paid are distributed accordingly using an apportionment system. This sees the larger amount go to the area that recorded the highest fleet miles.

All commercial trucks have qualified for registration done at the Albany, NY office. These are hired to carry goods and people. They must be operating in different jurisdictions that fall in the agreement. Power units also are included provided they carry weight in pounds more than twenty six thousand or have a number of axels.

Any vehicle that fulfills or exceeds these criteria and does not obtain proper registration has to regularly purchase trip permits for each truck in their fleet. However, some are exempted from seeking this plan. They include recreational cars, city delivery and pick up vehicles, buses that are used to transport chartered parties except in the capital, cars owned by government agencies as well as trailers.

Requirements to register vehicles under this plan are similar to those used to register in the state. One must provide proof of ownership, insurance and personal identity or date of birth. This can be done through mail addressed to the Albany office, NY or personal applications done at the main office.

The truck owner is usually notified about the expiration date in advance. Renewals require a fee payment to go through and complete. It should be done early to give it enough time for processing before the current one expires. This allows the truck to stay in business through the year. Again, renewals can be processed through mail.

There is an option to transfer the credentials of one truck to another if the latter is purchased to serve the same route. It is not necessary to get new registration. This process is done at the main office or through mail correspondence.
