EPA Downgrades BMW 328I Mph

By Ingrid Johnson

BMW got some sobering news earlier this week when the Environmental Protection Agency decreased the fuel-economy rating of its 2012 382i eight-speed automatic design. The down-tick came after the federal agency's own 2nd round of screening..

Dropped both highway and city

The miles per gallon on the BMW 328i automatic from 2012 now gets less gas mileage than originally anticipated by needs of the EPA. The numbers dropped to 23 mpg city and 33mpg highway from 24 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in just one week.

EPA tests show different outcomes

Every automaker does a lot of tests that the EPA requires to figure out what the gas mileage rating is for the vehicle. Sometimes the EPA does a second test just to make sure while other times it will just accept the automakers' numbers. After doing its own test, the EPA decided that the BMW car needed a decrease.

Not many tested

Only about 15 percent of all U.S. automobile models really get a special test done by the EPA, according to Car and Driver magazine.

Large drop

Typically, when the EPA makes a change to a fuel economy rating, it is not that low. This is something that BMW said surprised it. It is a massive drop when the rating drops by three mpg. Minor changes were anticipated, as the fine print disclaimer says it will do.

What you need to learn about BMW 238i

The 2012 BMW 328i packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder 240 horsepower motor that delivers 260 lb-ft of torque. It has an eight-speed transmission, which is operated by paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.

EPA testing standards

BMW did the first test in Munich. An official EPA fuel-economy test has to be done with controlled conditions on an indoor track. It goes through five cycles such as city, hot city, cold city, highway and aggressive highway. All additional variables are kept constant such as the type of gasoline put into the car for the test.

Lower rating to stay

The six-speed manual shift version of the 328i kept its 23/24 rating regardless of the change for the automatic version. BMW cannot ever change this since it will be unable to retest until it has the 2013 model to use.
