Getting Up-To Date With Medical Professional Development Certificates

By Ida Dorsey

A short overview of this important topic. Medical Professional Development Certificates are issued following the successful completion of the program. Students are required to follow a training program in one of the licensed establishments.

Enrolling for one of these programs means that you will be considered a trainee for it's duration and will consequently be unable to charge for your services. Enrolled students to these programs are also unable to practice any form of medicine unsupervised and without the express permission of their mentors in the program. A student on one of these programs basically has the same constraints as a student in medical school.

Program applicants originating from foreign countries need to have with them documents from their originating country and medical institution justifying their need for further training. Also, because students enrolled in these programs are unable to earn any money, the applicant should ensure their finances are sufficient to sustain them for the duration of the program.

In order to be allowed to host and conduct a Development Program, an establishment must obtain a registration from the State authorities. The approved establishment is responsible for the supervision and mentoring if and when need by of the applicant. The approved establishment cannot let the applicant perform any legislated medical acts, prescriptions, etc. Without the written consent of the patient.

The professional development program in this area is an opportunity for the applicant to improve and strength his existing knowledge and capacities. It is also gives him the opportunity to develop more skills and acquire more knowledge in a specific field. As such, when an applicant is required by his school or the medical establishment he is employed at to participate in the program, he should regard this as an opportunity to learn and better himself.

As mentioned above, the applicant is regarded as a trainee for the duration of his presence in the host establishment, and will therefore not receive any remuneration. However, should he be originally employed by a hospital or health center, he can negotiate his participation in the program and the period he will be away and be considered in training, therefore receive full or partial pay. This is up to the applicant to discuss with his employer without any involvement from the host institution.

At the end of the program, there is no examination required. A certificate of completion is issued to the participant who completed the program. However, should the participant not have behaved according to the rules given to him at any time during the period, the certificate may be denied. The usual duration of a development certificate in the medical field is usually of one year.

State authorities will review the rules governing these programs periodically, before an institution decides to host a program, they should check on the current rules with their state. Foreign participants in the program do not require a work permit, since they is no remuneration offered as part of the development program. All that is needed by a foreign participant of the program is a normal visa granting permission to be in the host country for at least a year.
