Olive Oil & 3 Wrong Ways To Utilize It

By Katie Onson

I think it should be noted that olive oil, in general, is one of the healthiest points of discussion to focus on. Very few can argue with such a point, especially when given the fact that this product is loaded with antioxidants and nutrients alike. In comparison to other cooking and culinary oils, this is a standout. Of course, there are ways in which it can be misused. To better understand what this topic entails, here are 3 common mistakes made with the oil in question.

According to Yahoo! Health, one of the mistakes made with olive oil is purchasing a "light" version. This is usually done for the purpose of cutting calories, which is a noble endeavor in its own right. However, many people may not know that most of these oils contain about the same amount of calories, regardless of what the label, on the front of the bottle, says. When it comes to "light" oil, you should know that this refers to its flavor and color more so than its nutritional value.

As far as other mistakes with olive oil are concerned, it's important to look at how this product may be kept near the stove. The reason why this is a problem is because said oil is extremely sensitive to heat and light. What this means, more simply, is that its natural benefits will be stripped away in due time. If you want to ensure that this product lasts as long as possible, keep the oil itself in a cool area where light isn't as prominent, such as a pantry.

If you're interested in purchasing olive oil, you may want to pick up more than a one or two bottles if there is a sale going on. This could become a problem, especially when you consider that this oil is not like wine: it does not become better with age. In addition, you may not use everything before their expiration dates hit. This is a problem, to say the least, and it's one that can be solved if you remain careful about what you spend.

These are just a few points to consider if you want to go about using this product in the long term. No one can argue with the fact that this type of oil is one of the best, whether it's in relation to cooking or the preparation of food in general. Of course, there are some ways in which it can be used better than others, which should be recognized. Keep the aforementioned points in mind that the longevity of your oil will stand to be that much greater.
